AOL Buys Bebo For $850 Million & SXSW Notes

March 13th, 2008 · by Dan

AOL acquires the social network site Bebo. For those that might not be familiar with them, Bebo is the largest social network site in the UK, Ireland, and New Zealand. And the third largest social networking site in the US behind only MySpace and Facebook.

A personal note I was a the The Best Online Resources panel yesterday at SXSW, where Angel Gambino the VP of Music for Bebo was speaking. Didn’t mention anything about the impending purchase, but did mention several good pieces of advice for artists.

I’m paraphrasing a bit, but artists should focus on maintaining their authenticy and creativity online. When you upload to sites like Myspace, iLike, Facebook. Add as much interesting and engaging content as possible. Add videos and photos of your band, could be from a concert, backstage, or even shots just screwing around on the road. Keep it current, don’t let it get stale. If people come to your pages and see you haven’t updated in awhile it looks like your not around anymore. Its important to give back to your fans as much as possible.
