Good stuff here. As a co-manager of band myself its so very true. Its a brave new world for bands and managers, the old model of getting a record contract is over, you and the band have to discover ways to promote, sell and move forward. The sugar daddies are gone.
Among other things an independent band manager needs “an entrepreneurial spirit, since every young artist is really just a start-up company.”

In the DIY era it is easy to misguide yourself into thinking that you have to do everything yourself. But that is impossible. There are simply not enough man hours in the day, and you lose touch with what you are promoting, your music! Building your team is like the building blocks to building your business. You wouldn’t create a business and then just hand it to one guy and have all the confidence in him to do everything for you!! But to bring people into your team to create a synergy for that business, that’s the right approach : )

Almost two years old and this article still holds true – try and get as many people as possible to contribute in whatever areas they can – marketing & promotion, strategic planning, distribution, branding, etc. And hopefully they won’t ask for much in return other than knowing they are helping contribute to the spreading of good art and music!
